Description
Jörmungandr is a giant sea serpent from Norse mythology, and son of Loki and the giantess Angrboda and siblings to Fenrir and Hel. He was created when Odin tossed him into the ocean that surrounds Midgard. Jörmungandr eventually grew so large that he was able to bite his own tail. It is said that when Jörmungandr releases his tail, Ragnarok will begin. Ragnarok being a huge battle to bring about the end of the current world to start a new one and the best Thor movie.
He is a star character of the PS4 game, God of War, and their betrayal of Jörmungandr seems a bit unrealistic since he's actually more long and skinny than large and girthy.
Thor is regarded as Jörmungandr's worst enemy. His first humiliation from Thor came when Thor was challenged to lift a cat, which turned out to be Jörmungandr in disguise. He was wearing little cat ears and glued on whiskers and wore a sign that said "Not World Serpent, just cat." Thor's failure to lift this "cat" ended up making people think Jörmungandr is fat. The last meeting between the serpent and Thor is predicted to occur at Ragnarok, when Jörmungandr will come out of the sea and poison the ocean and the sky. Thor will kill Jörmungandr and then walk nine paces before falling dead, having been poisoned by the serpent's venom.
Etymology
His name means either "huge monster," "earth necklace," or "great beast." He also sometimes goes by "world serpent." When he tried life as a mortal, he went around by the name of Norman Gander and become founder of Gander Mountain.
Abilities
Jörmungandr has tremendous strength and girth from its incredible size. It also has venomous spit that can poison the sea and the sky.
Tale
Another encounter comes when Thor goes fishing with the giant Hymir. When Hymir refuses to provide Thor with bait, Thor strikes the head off Hymir's largest ox to use as his bait, which for some reason Hymir has on his boat at this time. They row to a point where Hymir often sat and caught flat fish, where he drew up two whales, somehow, but Thor demands to go further out to sea, and does so despite Hymir's protest.
Thor then prepares a strong line and a large hook and baits it with the ox head, which Jörmungandr bites. Thor pulls the serpent from the water, and the two face one another, Jörmungandr dribbling poison and blood. Hymir goes pale with fear, and as Thor grabs his hammer to kill the serpent, the giant cuts the line, leaving the serpent to sink beneath the waves.
This was close to the start of Ragnarok, but close only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades.
