Manananggal
A painting of a Manananggal having a feast.

The Manananggal is a female vampire that feeds on the blood of fetuses. It premiered in episode 7, Manananggal a.k.a. Of Maths & Men

Description

Pronounced (probably) Man-uh-nan-gall, this vampiric creature is of Filipino decent, derived from the Tagalog word tanggal, which means to remove or separate. The manananggal is usually female and capable of severing its upper torso and sprouting huge bat-like wings. This usually results in the upper half having its intestines just hanging around as it flies. When in flight, the bottom half of the manananggal cannot move. If a manananggal tries jumping and then immediately splits, a message pops up on their HUD saying they cannot do that action unless they're on the ground.

Spreading salt or garlic on the top of the bottom half stops the manananggal from being able to reconnect, possibly being fatal if it can't wash it off before the sun rises. As with most non-Twilight vampires, the sun causes the manananggal to burn up and die. It also has a hard time dealing with various other things like daggers, vinegar, spices, and the tail of a stingray. The most famous manananggal was actually Steve Irwin of "Crocodile Hunter" fame.

Its meals often consist of unborn fetus blood, using its long proboscis-like tongues to reach up inside of pregnant mothers and suck the blood straight from the fetus's heart. This probably has to be done a lot per a meal, because a fetus can't contain that much blood. It tends to hide in volcanic caves during the day, so if you're pregnant, stay away from volcanoes. They often disguise themselves as normal people, typically old women or midwives.

Media

The manananggal was featured in the first ever Filipino horror movie, which was made in 1927. The movie was cleverly titled Manananggal. The first ever Filipino horror game, Nightfall: Escape, was made in 2016 with the manananggal as the main antagonist.

Abilities

The manananggal can split in two, horizontally at the waist, and sprout bat-like wings and fly around. Well only the top half flies around, the bottom just stays where it is. It also has sharp claws and is rather durable in a fight being an undead creature.

Tale

The tale tells of Benjie, who, while working at a hospital, met a beautiful young woman working as a midwife. The two fell in love quickly and within a couple of months they were married. For a couple of years, they lived happily together. Benjie, when reading the newspaper, remarked about a study on their town having the highest infant mortality rate in the Philippines, to which his wife brushed the question off and attributed it to low funding.

Months later, Benjie decided to surprise his wife at the hospital with a meal of salted garlic noodles (Odun noodles to be specific). After entering the maternity ward, he walked past a patient's room and heard what sounded like beating wings. Upon entering the room, he saw the bottom half of a human body and behind it was what looked like a giant bat creature hovering over a pregnant woman. Half in fear and half in...well, almost all in fear, Benjie tossed the salty garlic noodles at the creature, covering the bottom half of the torso. He ran out of the hospital as screams echoed from the room.

When the police investigated, they found the pregnant woman frightened but unharmed, and also observed how dusty the room was, accusing the lazy cleaning staff. When Benjie commented that the noodles he had spilled were gone, the police assured him that he must have dropped them elsewhere during the incident. Startled, Benjie headed home. In the morning, he awoke and realized his wife had not returned home that night. He called the hospital to see if anyone had seen her, but nobody recalled seeing her leave that evening. As the tale goes, nobody ever saw her again....

This was because she was the manananggal that Benjie ran into, and he accidentally killed her with Odun Noodles.
