Siren
Mosaïque d'Ulysse et les sirènes, a painting depiction of Ulysses and the sirens.

The Siren is a small bird/human hybrid, almost always female. It premiered in episode 1, Sirens a.k.a. Where is Big John McCain?

Description

Sirens are said to be living on a group of islands called Sirenum scopuli, or otherwise known as the Gallos (a.k.a. the Cocks) off the coast of Italy. They are a bird/human hybrid, almost always women but there are some males. There are said to be only 2, or maybe it was 5, left in the world. However, they are supposedly as small as a sparrow, so they may just be hard to spot.

Abilities

The siren sing a song of seduction to bring pray onto their island where they'll then be killed. If, however, their song is ignored, due to wax ear plugs or tying one's self to the mast of a ship, they commit suicide. Other descriptions of the siren claim their song puts sailors to sleep, then they will climb aboard the ship and kill them all. Some confuse the two descriptions, believing that a siren will sing their song, put a sailor to sleep, then commit suicide because their song was then ignored. This is not always the case.

A siren can fly AT LEAST 20mph.

Etymology

Siren is combination of the greek words seirá and eírō (which is not Europa, the moon), which means "binder, entangler."

Portrayal

They were first seen as a bird/woman hybrid, however as time passed, they were just seen as naked women mostly.

Christianity portrayed sirens as more promiscuous, and the drowning of sailors was representative of them drowning in unlawful pleasures or pussy.

Tale

Homer wrote of sirens in The Odyssey, where Odysseus's crew had to pass through siren territory. To prevent becoming seduced by their song, the crew wore wax earplugs and Odysseus tied himself to the mast. They were able to sail safely past the sirens and continue on their extensively long journey home.

Samurai Jack had to battle a couple of sirens in an episode of the show by the same name.

Sirens don't fly in the V-Formation. They fly in an "S" like Trogdor the Burninator.
