The Japanese yokai, or demon, Oni first appeared in episode 22, Oni a.k.a. Watashi Wa Shinde Iru.
Description
Oni are a kind of yokai in Japanese folklore, which are a class of supernatural monsters and demons. They are typically portrayed as hulking figures, larger than any human, with one or more horns growing out of their head. They usually have read, blue, or green skin. Other colors have been seen, but aren't as popular. Usually gigantic ogre-like creatures with sharp claws and wild hair. Keep that in mind, wild hair. Cannot be tamed by any comb. Oni are often seen wearing tiger-skin loincloths and carrying large iron clubs known as kanabo. The Oni and its kanabo are the poster child for invincibility. Oni are sometimes depicted with a third eye on their forehead or extra fingers and toes. This is most likely due to the radiation still in effect in certain areas of Japan.
Oni often appear in Japanese art, literature, or theater as stereotypical villains, and sometimes even French villains.
Oni are born when extremely evil people die and go to Buddhist Hell. They become servants to Enma, the leader of Hell and star of the anime Dragon Ball Z, and administer sentences passed down by Enma. Sometimes evil humans can become Oni while they are still alive.
In Japan, there is a festival called Setsubun in which people throw roasted soybeans out the door of their homes while saying "Demons out! Luck in!" These soybeans can also be thrown at a member of the family wearing an oni mask.
Etymology
The root of the word oni is "on", meaning to hide or conceal. Much like Velija did when following Dylan on his trip to Japan.
Abilities
Oni are extremely strong and tough, and many are sorcerers. They also have the ability to bring disaster and disease.
