Basilisk |
---|
The basilisk is a snake/chicken hybrid that is incredibly deadly. It premiered in episode 4, Basilisks a.k.a. Any Time A Whistle Takes A Piss.
Description
The basilisk, often called "baskilisk," though commonly believed to be large due to the Harry Potter books and movies, is actually very small, described to be only twelve fingers (Leonardo DaVinci's fingers to be specific) in length. It is comparable to a weasel in size, and actually is weak to the smell of a weasel, specifically its urine. The odor of the weasel's piss is allegedly so deadly it kills the weasel too, which just doesn't make sense...
Not to be confused with a Cockatrice, they are considerably close in description and ability. To be discussed further in a later episode.
A basilisk is created when a toad or a snake lays an egg, but a chicken hatches it. Other account claim "this animal is born from an egg laid by an old cock just before his death a clear night and full moon exactly at midnight." Which probably never happens.
Several recipes include Basilisk blood, including Spanish Gold. Powdered Basilisk blood really enhances mac n' cheese as well.
Etymology
Basilisk is Greek for Basiliskos, or "Little King," named as such for its crest like thing on its forehead (kinda like a crown).
Abilities
It is said that it could kill people with a look, breath fire, and kill people with its voice. In addition, that it's breath was so toxic it could kill anything nearby. The death stare does not require eye contact to kill, like Harry Potter made us believe. It leaves a wide wake of venom in its path, that could melt faces off.
Tale
A tale brought to you by podcast favorite author, Pliny the Elder. Pliny describes the basilisk in great detail, discussing how it moves, and the powers it has, including the ability to destroy all shrubs, yes ALL SHRUBS! It was so deadly and poisonous, that if a soldier killed one, the poison would run up the spear and kill the soldier. Pliny speaks of the only way to safely kill a basilisk, by using a weasel to expel its effluvium, killing the basilisk immediately.
This is Adam's third favorite Pliny tale.
